Fred Dirks, son of Dick and Gretchen (Ahrens) Dirks, was born on April 14, 1921 near Fonda, Iowa. He was educated in Fonda area schools and went on to farm with his father. On January 14, 1942, Fred married Alice Swanson near Pocahontas. The couple settled and farmed in the Fonda area until 1949, when they moved just northwest of Pocahontas. Fred continued to farm until retiring in 1983. The couple then moved into Pocahontas. Fred was diagnosed as having cancer in May of 1989. Needing additional care, he was, moved to the Pocahontas Manor Care Center on February 2, 1990. Fred was a member of the United Methoist Church of Pocahontas.
Survivors include his wife, Alice; a son, Virgil of Pocahontas; a daughter, Mrs. Matt (Darlene) Hall of Algona; 2 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; brothers, Harold of Spirit Lake; Leroy & Edward of Fonda, John of Derby, KS, Richard of Lakeville, 'MN, Roland of Wichita, KS; sisters, Violet Just of Windom, MN, Margie Nelson of Culver City, CA, Marcella Piercy of Newell. Fred was preceded in death by his par-ents, and four sisters.
