GOOD
MORNING! A really beautiful morning here in East TN, blue sky and quiet with
the exception of lots of birds doing their singing and the danged 17 year
cicadas that at times are almost deafening. Nice to be able to witness one of
nature’s miracles -- the advent of the re-appearance of the cicadas, but, holy
cow are they noisy. First time I heard them I thought that a neighbors Air
Conditioning fan motor had really gone bad and was about to blow up. Guess we
will have them around for another couple of weeks and then they will disappear
for another 17 years, know some politicians that I wish would follow suit.
Old friend James Hartsell’s
daughter Carol Nichols stopped by yesterday afternoon stayed overnight and has
now headed on down the road to visit her Dad’s wife now living not far from
Charlotte NC. Was really great to see Carol and so wish she could have stayed
longer. James was an old military buddy/brother of mine going way back to about
1962 when we first met in Roanoke Rapids NC while both of us worked on the
radar site located there. James has since passed but I still miss him!!!
Some yard and garden
work to get at soon, need to get the cattle panels in place for the climbing
Blue Lake string beans that we like so much and probably do some weeding and
run the string trimmer a bit. Plenty
to keep me busy for a while so suppose I should get my behind in gear and get
at it.

We had a nice week-end last week. Mark and Lori Caauwe
came to bring their daughter, Jamie and Mike out to the airport to fly home to
Baton Rouge. David, Deb and children came over Sat. afternoon.
We had a nice day fishing and swimming with grandkids.
I have been out working in the yard today. There is just something about
digging in the dirt that is so relaxing.
Love to everyone, Edna

Things happen during the month---so feel free to
add daily news to the DKSNEWS on Google Docs. To get there http://jrdirks.com/Newsletters/ then just click on DKSNEWS and edit to your heart’s content. At the
end of each month I will summarize and put it in the Dirks Monthly Newsletter. I
will scout Facebook and my emails and try to add this information to DKSNEWS.
Facebook is too scattered to find any meaning and I only have so many relatives
that show up since I don’t do the friends and relatives stuff too often. So
many times I only see half of the conversation. Don’t worry about your
mistakes—I will just add to themJ.
On the third Thursday of the month we go lunch at church (Keenagers) for the old people at noon. I did find and plant
some rhubarb plants and okra seeds—since my okra I had from years past didn’t
spout. Other regular monthly activities are the doctor appointments for checkups.
Things are green and brown here—that is
good. Haying and corn looks good. Wheat is turning brown and the combines will
probably start rolling next weekend for some of the early fields. Most corn is
knee high and some is waist high.

The month started, out with very stormy
weather during the first week in May. Leann and Tom at Pocahontas had 2 ½ "of
rain and hail for 40 minutes late one evening. She has the pictures to prove
the storm was there.
The first and second weekends Marv played
horseshoe at Indianola, Boone, and last weekend we went to the Des Moines
fairgrounds where 20 some guys played the games. I enjoyed walking on the big
deserted fairground area by myself. What a weird feeling that was! In the afternoon
we went to Clive and attended a Samuelson graduation party there.
On Sunday Mother's Day we enjoyed buffet
at the Pizza Ranch and that evening we all went to the Fort Dodge airport to
see Leann's foreign exchange student from 15 years ago arrive with her 2 year
old son from Sao Paulo, Brazil. She was here for 17 days. Leann tried to keep Cris and Bernado entertained with
shopping events and etc. and she visited some of her former classmates. She graduated
in Pocahontas her senior year in 1997. She came a week before Zach's high
school graduation so she helped in all the planning and preparations Leann had
scheduled to do. Kerry's family from Omaha arrived just for the day. Leann and
Tom hosted the reception in their home.
Zach had another foot surgery as the
metals in one foot were causing a problem. They removed the plate and 4 screws
and had to shave the bone off too. He is walking on his heel. On Saturday the
next day Leann's took Zach to Cedar Rapids to watch the three electronic cars
race that Zach had worked on this year. The competition was very interesting!
On Memorial Day we attended the Veterans
Day program at our church cemetery and then proceeded to the Union Cemetery at
Pomeroy. The flags were so beautiful blowing in the breeze.
Today is a very sad day for us as Cris and Bernado boarded the 7
a.m. flight at Des Moines to return to her husband and family in Brazil. We
shall never forget the happy times we had together here in 2012 and may the memories
last forever.
I'm hoping to be very busy soon with your
phone calls and messages of our forthcoming get-together this month. Our
schedules seem to get busier already but we would love to see you all come
again this year. Please call me anytime at 712-288-5384 cell 712-358-0165. E-mail

No swimming today! I still go three times a week for an hour, no aches
or pains. My daughter, Mary Ellen from California thought this would be
something for me to do. I didn’t own a bathing suit but she signed me up and
the pool was opened for two months and I am still going at 88. I guess my
memory is gone. I only know my daughter and other son and his wife. I don’t
know any other people but I am getting to know more.
I would like to get down to Pomeroy, Iowa. My brother, Karl Gerdes is
there. My older brother Loren Gerdes died in 2003. My cousin Marie Acker is in the Pomeroy Care
Center. She is a year younger than I am. There are a few others that I know
that are at the Pomeroy Care Center.
This place has changed in September. A new place opened about 18 miles
from here and practically all of the people from here resigned and went to the
new place. We have a bunch of foreigners to come and run this place. Some don’t
speak very good English. A lot of people have died or gone elsewhere. Some
rules have changed or are overlooked. It is getting to be a mess.
I
see by the Dirks Newsletter that Norine and Dave Bockelmann have moved from
Slayton to Windom, closer to Jerry and Linda Just. Their Aunt Eileen (Dirks) Caauwe used to
babysit for me at Heron Lake. I had eight children. My older son farms the farm
since my husband died unexpectedly at 57 years of age. My son
farms900 acres. All of
our children attended college. Norine writes to me now and then. I knew her
parents better.
So much for now and hope this finds everyone doing better. Love, Eileen Eike

Hello Dirks relatives. What a beautiful
day we’re having, temps in the 80’s with a chance of showers tomorrow and
storms on Wednesday night and possibly Friday and Saturday, hope not. Summer
will be here June 20th my two little grandchildren are growing fast. Lila Sha Stuart was born Dec 13, 2011. Her parents are Adam and
Shalee I have been busy planting some mini roses and other flowers. My
granddaughter gave me three pink lilies for Mother’s Day and they are doing
well. I have two squirrels that keep me busy feeding them, plus gold finches,
robins, grosbeaks and other birds that are new to the feeder. The blackbirds
clean up the ground. Boots is doing fine and we go to the park for our walks.
My two little great grandchildren are
growing so fast. Adam and Shalee Stuart’s little girl Lia
is 5 months old (Dec 13, 2011). Gage Hartman was born on January 9, 2012 his
parents are Joshua and Jessica Hartman. They live in Denver, CO. Josh works for
the Denver Broncos in sports medicine. He enjoys that. Gary and Marline Nimke keep busy. He works as an electrician for the city
and Marlene works at the Manson State Bank and is lay minister at St. John’s
Lizard at Palmer. Spencer works for the City of Manson and Heath plays soccer.
I keep busy quilting at St. John’s at
Palmer every Thursday, on Tuesday morning we go to Twin Lakes for breakfast,
there are about 10-12 of us. That is enjoyable.
God bless you all and until next month.

Hi John, sorry I
haven't been keeping in touch too well. I noticed your computer problems, and
all kinds of bells and whistle went off. How I wish I had a solution for you.
Here's my similar problem. Every Wednesday, we go to Houston. Doesn't matter if
I turn my computer off or leave it on, when we return,
my internet access is very slow. Sometimes, I can get it back by running a
registry cleaner, or other maintenance tools, most of the time I can't. Also,
try rebooting both my computer and modem; it will occasionally come back, but
usually only after a couple of days. Sometimes, like this past week, it just
came back on its own the following Wednesday. Repeated conversations with my
internet provider have offered no solutions. How does it know I've gone to Houston?
Virus scans, spyware scans show nothing. One thing I hadn't considered is low
voltage. I do notice my modem gets pretty warm sometimes. Anyway, if you have
any other ideas, or come up with something else, let me know. It's been driving
me batty.
We are doing pretty good.
Arlene has had lots of problems with the chemo and has been off awhile. She
went back on the chemo for two weeks, and then they wouldn't let
her have chemo last week. They've also stopped giving her another
chemo as her body just can't tolerate it.
Take care. Hoppy

It was a busy month. Regrettably
that included a funeral. He was the last remaining of my Uncles and Aunts on
either side of the family. Uncle Hank was 105 last February. He was able to
live at home until a few months before his 103rd Birthday. He had been doing
well but last Tuesday when I visited him he was not good. The Staff has testing
him for infection. He did have pneumonia and was put on antibiotics but by Wednesday
he was in Hospice Care. His liver and other organs had shut down. By Friday he
was gone. He had a good run and he ran it well. It was mostly us cousins at the
funeral. He had outlived his friends.
I still play tennis three times a week, attend a bible class on
Thursdays, help put the church bulletins together for all three weekend
services at church, and try to spend some time at the office each day. I
continue to fight city hall. Last year I got the maximum they could charge us
the first year reduced from $18,000 to $13,000 (they can increase it each year
based on inflation). This year I got our first billing reduced by $2,200 from
what they wanted. I’m still working on changing the bid specifications so our
annual costs will be more predictable and so we have more control over
potential extra costs.
Monday I go to a graduation in Omaha for my granddaughter,
Maureen. She has a soccer scholarship to Midland University. Friday we will
make our annual cemetery run. A week from tomorrow I will go to Crab Orchard
for the Memorial Day services and lunch with the family.
Best wishes to all for a great summer.

Hi Dirks family, the first weekend in May
Kerry and I met in St. Ansgar and travelled with his
Mom to the twin cities for Aunt Edna's funeral. It was a wonderful celebration
of her life. I spent the next two weeks getting ready for the move to Iowa for
the summer.
Since Kerry is still working in Omaha, Nebraska
I moved to the stone house we bought in St. Ansgar. The last full day of school was Thurs. May 17
and on Fri. May 18 I had the truck packed with clothes, cats, and the dog to
head to St. Ansgar.
The following weekend-Memorial Day weekend-Kerry and I pulled the
enclosed trailer back to Illinois to pick up my motorcycle and the mower.
So for the summer I will be a resident of
Iowa and Kerry will make the 4 hour trip to visit as many weekends as he can. I
hope this finds everyone well and enjoying this wonderfully cool weather.

Hello
from Northwood on this cool evening. Seems a week ago almost turned air
conditioner on. This weather isn’t helping my aching joints—just wish it would settle down. Had circle on May Day then
went to Edna’s visitation and funeral on the 4th and 5th. Stayed up there
on Friday night so could visit a little more with Jeffrey, Marcia, and
Andrew. I went with Kerry and Joanie as I don’t drive that far
anymore.
I
started cutting out quilt pieces the next week, and have been sewing a few of
the blocks together but make the mistake of picking up a book. When I
start a book usually have to finish it so cuts into time I should be doing
something else. I helped out at church office on the 14th as secretary
wanted to attend her son’s track meet. Had only one call so just sat and
read.
Went
for blood check on the 17th and got the news to come back in two weeks as it
had gone way to low. Kerry and Joanie came week-end of 18th with Joanie
starting her stay for summer in their stone house. Had my eyes checked on
the 17th and need to have cataract on left eye removed but could not get in to
see the surgeon until 6th of Aug. Then who knows when he will be
able to do it—five years ago when I had right eye done it was only a week after
my eye exam—that’s how busy he is now. What a pain!! Went back
today and had blood checked and it was back up so can go a month.
Appointment was at 11:45 so Joanie and I went out to lunch at Wok and Roll then
did a little shopping. A good way to end the month.

Cool here today. I am taking
my sisters and nieces out for Mothers Day brunch tomorrow. Down south it will
be Decoration Day at all of the area church cemeteries.
Mother always placed
wreaths on all of hers and my dad’s parent’s graves as well as those of my baby
sisters. I kept that tradition going for many years until I learned that folks
in the area were stealing all the wreaths from the graves to sell at flea
markets.
How shameful it is
too think that people sink that low to do such a deed.
Family tradition is that we wear a white carnation for the Mother's
no longer with us and a red one for those still with us. It is a time to honor
and reflect on and most of all to give thanks to our Mothers.
Happy Mother’s Day to all Moms in all the
families.

Family/Doctor update: Thanks again for your prayers. We had
a wonderful weekend celebrating David’s and Andrew’s graduation from high
school. I could definitely feel the prayers for my strength.
I had my monthly doctor visit this afternoon. My tumor marker
only came down 3 points (I still have 54 points to go to be normal). Needless
to say, we are disappointed. The doctor suggested that we... change one of the
chemo drugs to see if a new combination will help my numbers drop more
significantly. I’m a little nervous about potential side effects of the new
drug—high blood pressure, possible bowel perforation, kidney problems, etc.,
but I don’t know what else to do. We can’t keep doing the present protocol--it
would take 18 months to get my tumor marker in the normal range at the current
rate. Plus the neuropathy in my feet has been worse this last round. I didn’t
have the courage to ask the doctor about my prognosis. I knew at the beginning
that ovarian cancer is a tough cancer to beat (1 in 3 cure rate), but I
continue to have hope. I know that God is the Great Physician and He is the One
who ultimately heals, whether by the doctors or a miracle. So I ask you to
continue to lift me up in prayer. I really am fighting for my life at this
point.
Specific prayer requests: Complete healing

Hello from Missouri, It has been a while
since I have written, so thought I would try and send a few lines. Things around
here have pretty much been the same. Gene's stomach still hasn't woke up. Seems like he goes a few days feeling better and
then he is sicker the next. I wish there was something I could do to help him
feel and get better. On Memorial Day, Henry and Leona's kids all got together.
Gene and I went out to the old home place to see them all for a little while
and I took part in a pot luck lunch. Gene later had to go to the hospital to
get some more fluids as he was feeling very weak and dizzy. This is one of the
signs of being dehydrated. Bertha and Gene dropped by the house latter and
visited a while as well. We had a nice visit and it was good to see them.
Sunday, Nellie set up a school reunion for those that went to the Darlington
school. Gene felt well enough to go down there for a little while. He wished he
could have stayed longer, but couldn't as he tires so
easily. This was for those in his class at that time, so he was looking forward
to seeing some of his old classmates.
Seen this poem in my "Good Old
Days" magazine and wanted to share it.
GOOD
OLD DAYS
(By
Elvema Chesser)
Do
you remember the Good Old Days?
With a pump outside the back door?
The
chicken coop, and fresh eggs,
And
scrubbing the linoleum floor?
And
using heavy iron pots and pans
On
a cook stove burning wood?
Everything
was made from scratch,
Mostly healthy, always good.
The
pain of Monday's wash days
Gas
motors and wringer machines?
Sadirons
heated on the cook stove
Took
forever to heat, it seemed.
We
wore those hated long johns;
Had
wool snowsuits to wear;
Kept
us from freezing
in
the cold winter's air.
Those
freezing, hurried dashes
No
toilets then-
But
they were necessary trips,
A way of life back then.
Saturday-night
baths by the kitchen stove,
The dash to our unheated beds.
Soon
warm as toast in our flannel pj s,
With
quilts pulled over our heads.
Do
you remember the hot days of summer?
We
lived through without fans or AC?
Didn't
mind I t all; would do it again....
If
you remember, you're old -like me.
I can honestly say that I do remember
doing these things. But she didn't mention using the old scrub board that you
used until you wore blisters on you knuckles. I do remember dragging in the big
tub to take a bath in. The making of home-made bread.
I also remember times we had to heat the iron on the stove to iron the cloths.
Yes, at some of these times they did have a better way, but at that time we did
not have the resources.
“Am
I really that old?"
God bless and take care,

We had a very nice Mother’s Day. The
weather was nice and warm. We had a Sunday brunch. Sandra and Henrietta did
most of the cooking. A lot of Henry relative stopped by and then Roger came in
the afternoon.
Went down to Roger’s
for a week. I got my hair cut and mostly walked to the store and did
some cooking. He went to Mammoth for the weekend of the 18th. I came back to
Sandra on Monday.
Not doing anything much but taking walks,
as I was walking the other day I heard a plane and the flap of the parachute
and knew it was the sky divers so. I hurry to the place they land. It was the
first time I was close enough to see them land.
Just got back from
seeing the radiologist/oncologist doctor. He confirmed the tumor in my
pelvic is from the thyroid cancer. He recommended radiation treatments, since I
am not in any pain; he thought it would be a good idea to do the treatments
right away because if the tumor keeps growing it could scatter the bone. I will
need to go into Los Angeles for the radiation treatment. I will be given 10
treatments, 5 a week so it will only be two weeks and usually there aren’t too
many bad side effects. They have a shuttle bus that will pick me up at the
Thousand Oaks facility and take me into LA.
Hope everyone enjoyed the memorial weekend
and honored all the veterans for what they have done for our country.

Hi to all the Dirks families. Well summer is has
arrived, suppose to get in the 90’s again today, but more normal next week. We
had had some ample rain, but need more. All of the corn is planted and the
beans will probably be done this week.
My co-chairman and I have been working on
three quilts this past week, one for a bible camp sale and one for a friend who
has cancer and one for me. She makes the blocks and we both tie them. Then I do
the edges with blind stitches. My fingers have really taken some abuse.
This weekend the Pocahontas area schools
have high school graduation. I only have one, our church secretary’s son. I
can’t beleeve how fast those kids have grown to
adulthood.
The week of May 1st Darv, Kath, Adam and
Tiffany Hayen and Barry attended the funeral of
Kath’s dad, Tom Ballard.
I have an
appointment for a haircut and then to coffee. I plan to attend the reunion so
hope to see you all soon

Mother's Day Sunday, May 13th. In honor of my
mother, Mary Ihnen; mother-in-law, Irma Perkins; and in memory of my Aunt Edna,
I am sharing the following taken from my Aunt Edna's recent memorial folder.
"A Mother's Love" A Mother's
love is something that no one can explain, it is made of deep devotion and
sacrifice and pain, it is endless and unselfish and enduring come what may for
nothing ca...n destroy it or take that love away...It is patient and forgiving
when all others are forsaking, and it never fails or falters even though the
heart is breaking...It believes beyond believing when the world around
condemns, and it glows with all the beauty of the rarest, brightest gems...It
is far beyond defining, it defies all explanation, and it still remains a
secret like the mysteries of creation. A many splendid miracle man cannot
understand and another wondrous evidence of God's tender guiding hand.
Happy Mother's Day to
those special ones listed above and to all mothers everywhere!!

Hello everyone. This has been
a busy month with Mother’s Day, Graduations and Memorial Day holidays. I had
the families here for all three holidays.
Some of the people (snowbirds)
who spent the summer in the south are coming home and it keeps me busy helping
them. I still do my own mowing—which takes 3-4 hours. I have 25 bushes around
the house to trim every two weeks.
Dale and Cathy were here this
weekend so they decorated the family graves at Pomeroy. Cathy gave me two
tomato plants and that will be my garden this year.. I
did freeze some more rhubarb.
Here’s wishing Marj Nelson and
Eugene McGinley both a speedy recovery. Hope to see everyone at the reunion.
Take care,

Hi
Family, Well, summer is underway and the weather has been nice. We have
been getting some rain and the temps are staying mainly in the 70’s. The
garden is in, but it seems to be slow to grow this year.
Dale
and I are keeping very busy! I have been working 5-6 days a week and
usually my days are longer than 8 hours. Dale is taking on a part-time
job, where I work. He is still at Iowa Health Systems and now he is
learning how to service Husqvarna Viking sewing machines.
Ben
and family are doing fine. Keeping busy with ball games and they
purchased a pull behind motor home, so they will be trying the modern camping
experience.
Gary and Laura are doing some home
repairs. Laura will graduate with her paramedic degree in August.
Looking forward to
seeing some of you at the reunion!

from Wal-Mart... cannot stand to see them dying for no good reason! Really feeling
my age! (You laugh... don't know if I'm brave enough face the next 20 years!)
Certainly not for the meek,
Air conditioner started making a racket a couple of hours ago. Get out
the checkbook again. I will never deal with sears again ...$7,000 and 7 years
plus countless repair bills and still not right.
It is supposed to have some rain again in a couple of days for an
extended 3 days. Hope that pans out as the ground has cracks and we have had
some good rains!
Jim flew up to Omaha for Mothers Day... and all three kids have been
there. His Mom is in better spirits now but the blood pressure tends to spike
without warning.
Hope this finds you both well!
Love ya! PV

Hello to everyone. The May
weather sure has been changeable, warm, cold and windy. Early morning
temperatures are in the 40’s. Something has changed our weather pattern. Everything
is growing and looks nice. The flowers were up and blooming so early.
We had sad news last month
with the passing of Edna Arends. She will be truly misses by all.
May was a very busy month with
graduations, birthdays, anniversaries and Memorial Day. Let us not get too busy
that we don’t write letters. I enjoy hearing from everyone.
I hope everyone had a Happy
Mother’s Day. It is a very special day for moms.
