PRESERVE YOUR PAST FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
Most photographs are one of a kind. Don't lose your families pictorial history. Locally, there are several companies that restore old photographs, make negatives from them, and can make prints in like tones of browns, reds, black and whites, or colored in all sizes. What's wonderful is that the negative insures reproductions of the original forever.
Not all-photographic processes are created equal. Ask questions, compare prices, and determine whether the company processes themselves or has to send them away, and make decisions based on quality, endurance, and types of service.
HAND-MADE ITEMS FROM TEXTILES
Fabrics, yarns, and threads would probably last forever if they were made into items that were never folded, laid out singly on a flat surface in a darkened room that was well ventilated, had relative humidity of about 50%, and was free from pollution, dust, mold, insects, rodents, and so on. But the real world is full of damaging elements, so careful planning must be foremost in preserving these types of heirlooms. Fabrics, etc. should be placed out of direct sunlight, in moderate temperatures with as few folds as possible, and should be cleaned only when necessary. Laundering is extremely hard on aging textile products. Rod pockets should be hand sewn on the back when hanging a fabric creation.
Fabrics stored should be placed away from light, in moderate temperature (not a hot attic nor a cold basement), wellventilated, dry, and clean. Plastic bags encourage mildew. Wrap fabrics in clean cotton sheets or pillowcases and store in acid-free boxes. Acid-free paper crumpled into long rolls and placed in the folds will help keep creases from becoming permanent. (Re-folding in different places frequently also helps) Fabrics stacked should be kept to a minimum as added weight creates damaging pressure.
DOCUMENT REPAIR, RESTORATION, AND PRESERVATION (INCLUDES BOOKS, BINDINGS, ALBUMS, AND LEATHER PRODUCTS)
There are companies available that repair, restore, and preserve paper documents. They can remove adhesive tapes, dry clean the documents, relax folded and rolled papers with an humidification process, and preserve it, photocopy it, and advise on Archival permanent storage methods. They have products to restore bindings, rejuvenate, restore, and preserve leathers, and have a multitude of binders, boxes, and acid-free papers for storing and preserving. Some binders are even dust and waterproof.
SAVE YOUR PAST; SAVOR YOUR PRESENT; AND PRESERVE THEM FOR THE FUTURE.
